Kajbumščak Trail - June 22nd, 2025 - Krapina, Croatia

In the picturesque town of Krapina, just 50 km north of Zagreb, lies the world-renowned Krapina Neanderthal site, a place of scientific, cultural, and natural significance. From this historic site, trails wind through the rolling hills and forests once inhabited by the Krapina Neanderthal.

The Kajbumščak Trail connects two worlds — past and present — like a bridge between old friends. It invites runners to experience the paths our ancient ancestor, affectionately known as "Grandpa Kajbumščak", once walked, hunted, and explored more than 130,000 years ago. The race takes participants from the valley of the Krapinčica River (170 m) to the scenic peaks of Strahinjčica (846 m) and Brezovica (581 m), and back.

All trails are certified by ITRA (International Trail Running Association) and qualify for the UTMB Index (20k category). They are also part of the ITRA National League and the KontinenTrail League.

You can choose from three routes:

“Dedek Kajbumščak” Trail

Distance: 29 km
Elevation gain: +1800 m
Start: 9:00 AM
KontinenTrail – Long Course

“Šumski Gujdek” Trail

Distance: 18 km
Elevation gain: +1100 m
Start: 10:00 AM
KontinenTrail – Short Course

“Mali Krap” Trail

Distance: 9 km
Elevation gain: +440 m
Start: 10:30 AM
KontinenTrail – Recreational

The race start/finish is set in a green, shaded pedestrian area next to the sculpture park Forma Prima and the Neanderthal Museum. Perfect for a family picnic or full-day outing, even on a warm June day. Food and drink options are available nearby.
